Mockham Farmhouse

- II
Farmhouse. Probably late C17 but earlier fabric may be concealed, remodelled in
late C19. Unrendered stone rubble. Slate roof, half-hipped at right end, hipped at
left end. Tall stone rubble stack at left end with tapered cap, heightened with
brick shaft, axial brick stack and rendered stack to gable end of rear kitchen wing.
Overall L-shape on plan with kitchen wing to rear of hall to left (upper end) of
through-passage containing staircase and parlour with dairy beyond to right, the
latter said to have been originally an outbuilding.
2 storeys. 6-window range. Principally C19 fenestration 2-light casement at left
end, then three 3-light casements, all 2 panes per light and two 3-light casements
at lower end, 3 panes per light. Ground floor has a 2-light casement at left end
and a 3-light casement, both 3 panes per light to left of stone rubble porch with
plank door and slated gabled roof. 3-light casement to right, 7 panes per light and
2-light dairy window at right end. Small state heraldic shield to upper storey to
left of shield depicting 3 tuns and date 1?77, the second number obliterated. C19
fenestration also intact to rear kitchen wing and to rear of main range.
Interior: ground floor inspection only suggested C19 joinery and fittings largely
intact and unspoilt. 2 roughly chamfered hall ceiling cross beams. C19
chimneypieces to hall and parlour. Roof-space not accessible at time of survey.
Mockham was farmed in the early C19 by the Gould family, founders of the Baptist
Church at Brayford (q.v.).
