Large house. Said to be 1801 and features are consistent with that date.
Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone rubble stacks with C20 brick chimney
shafts; slate roofs.
Double depth plan house facing south. 4 rooms wide and flanking front rooms
project forward each end. Entrance hall and rear stairs occupy full depth left of
centre. Axial stack backing onto passage. Right end with axial stack and left end
with outer lateral stack. Service rooms in rear wing which is listed separately.
2 storeys. Symmetrical 1:2:1 window bay front, left and right project. 20-pane
(8/12) sashes to ground floor crosswings and 16-pane sashes to first floor. 2
doorways to main block are C20 French windows. The right one has C19 overlight
with margin panes, and outer pair of early C19 panelled doors and panelled reveals.
Flat lead-roofed 5-bay verandah across front between crosswings supported on a
series of granite Doric columns and with plain entablature and granite paved floor.
Projecting eaves on shaped brackets. Crosswing roofs are hipped each end.
Crosswings have 2 first floor 16-pane sashes. Rear elevation includes a large
round-headed sash with glazing bars to stairs.
Interior includes much original plasterwork joinery and chimney-pieces. The
entrance hall has 3-bay arcade of elliptical-headed arches with circular-section
timber posts and open well stair has square-section newels with caps, stick
balusters and shaped stair brackets.
House was built for Wreford family and replaced a former mansion to north of nearby
Church of St Petrock (q.v.).
