COMBE MARTIN KILN LANE, Combe Martin
SS 54 NE
1/75 Tunnel on south side of lane
- leading to Berrys Quarry
- II
Tunnel. C19. Stone rubble. Short tunnel through quarry bank giving cart access to
enclosed quarry. Semi-circular arched tunnel, approximately 5 metres in length.
Rough stone voussoirs with retaining parapet over front entrance arch. The
quarrying of limestone and lime-burning were major C19 industries in Combe Martin.
The tunnel is an unusual survival and breaks in the masonry suggest that it was
successively extended as the spoil banks enclosing the quarry steadily grew.
