7/79 Homeleigh House (Gilsons)
GV II
House and shop. Probably early C19. Roughcast rendered stone rubble and timber
framed with brick infill to sides and rear. Slate roof with rendered stack at left
end, shared with adjoining property to left. Brick stack to rear.
Plan: Extensively altered in C20 and shop now occupies entire ground floor, but
originally consisted of through-passage running from front to rear courtyard to right
of single principal front room with kitchen at rear heated by fireplace cross rear
left-hand corner now blocked; the staircase, sited across the building, being
situated between the front and rear room. The latter has now been moved to rear
right-hand corner, running from back to front, and the rear of the passage has been
absorbed by The Dairy, (q.v.) to right.
Exterior: 3 storeys. 2 window range. 12 paned sashes to upper storey, 16 paned
sashes to middle storey. Late C19 shop window with incised pilasters and fascia
concealed by C20 one. Doorway to right has bracketted hood and 5 panelled door, the
upper 3 panels glazed.
Interior: Extensively altered in C20. Part of C19 tiled floor survives at rear of
passage. Late C19 register grate to first floor chamber. King post roof structure.
The right-hand top storey sash appears to be inserted in a much larger blocked
opening, and the discovery of quantities of grain beneath the top floor floorboards
suggests a possible sack-hoist arrangement to an attic storeroom.
