Farmhouse. Circa late C16/early C17 or possibly earlier with circa late C17/early
C18, extended and altered internally in C19. Rendered stone rubble walls with gable
ended roof, slate at the front, asbestos slate at rear; half-hipped roof to rear
wing. 2 gable end stacks to front range:- right-hand one is rendered brick, left-
hand one is projecting built of rubble. Rear wing has projecting rubble lateral
stack at left-hand side and similar truncated stack at gable end.
Originally 3-room and through passage plan with lower room to right. Hall heated by
rear lateral stack with possibly original shallow bay to front at inner end likely
formerly to have had a window. Inner room heated by gable end stack. Dog-leg
stairs in a projection behind the lower room adjoining the passage may have been
inserted in newel projection. In circa late C17/early C18 a heated rear wing was
added behind the hall and inner room possibly as a kitchen since the lower room may
have been unheated. This is uncertain because the lower end was extended probably
in the C19 to include a dairy. Also in the C19 an outshut was added along the rear
wing and the house was modernised internally concealing a number of original
features such as fireplaces.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front. Left-hand windows on ground and first
floor are 12-pane sashes, the ground floor one is early C19, the first floor one
later, in a half-dormer. Projection to left of centre with half-hipped roof has
early C20 2-light casement with glazing bars on first floor. Immediately to its
right is shallower projection with a circa late C19 2-light sash on ground floor,
each with 6 panes. At centre on first floor is C19 2-light casement with glazing
bars and H-L hinges. To right of centre on first floor is 9-pane early C19
hornless sash. On ground floor to the right is C19 2-light dairy window with small
panes and iron stanchion bars. To right of centre on the ground floor is C20 part-
glazed porch built in front of original segmental headed chamfered granite doorway.
Towards left-hand end is C20 part-glazed door under pentice C20 porch. At rear is
wing to right of centre with C19 outshut adjoining to its left. Immediately beyond
that is shallow rectangular stair projection.
The area in front of the house, adjoining the road, is extensively cobbled.
Interior: The hall (to left of passage) has roughly chamfered cross beams resting
on chamfered corbels. Some C18 2-fielded panel doors survive on the ground floor.
C17 dog-leg stair survives with heavy turned and moulded newels and similar
balusters resting on closed string (boarded in on the lower flight).
This house has had various alterations but its original plan form is still
discernible and it is likely that a number of early features such as original
fireplaces and beams may be concealed. The staircase is an interesting survival of
a surprisingly good quality where a simple newel might have been expected.
