Description

BUCKLAND MONACHORUM BUCKLAND MONACHORUM
SX 46 NE
3/83 Netherton House
-
GV II

House, formerly farmhouse. Probably C17 origins with C18 addition, much altered in
early C19. Stone rubble walls, stucco at the front. Slate roof, gable ended to
front block, half hipped to rear wing. 2 gable end stacks to front block; right-hand
one is brick, left-hand one is projecting rubble. Rendered rubble lateral stack at
left-hand side of rear wing, similar lateral stack at rear of main block.
Originally probably 2-room-and-through-passage plan C17 house with left-hand room
heated by gable end stack and right-hand room heated by rear lateral stack, possibly
with newel stairs adjoining. Probably kitchen and service wing added behind left-
hand room in C18. In the early C19 the house was completely re-fronted, the left-
hand room re-modelled and staircase inserted at the back of the passage. Probably at
this stage or slightly later a lower 1 room plan extension was added at the right-
hand end.
2 storeys with attic. Almost symmetrical 3 window front, 4 windows to ground floor.
All early C19 hornless sashes, the outer two in the 1st floor have 16 panes, the
others have 12 panes. At centre on the ground floor is porch with 2 Composite
columns supporting an entablature and an early C19 2 panel door behind. Lower
extension at right-hand end has one pointed arched window with Gothic Y-tracery.
Irregular rear facade has large wing projecting to the right with lateral stack at
the centre and shallow rectangular projection beside it possibly for stairs.
Interior. The right-hand room of the original block has chamfered and stopped
granite jambs to-the fireplace with a renewed rough granite lintel. The left-hand
room has early C19 simply recessed panelling with chair rail. At the rear of the
room is a small arched alcove. Chimney piece has simply decorated frieze. Circular
rib to plaster ceiling. At the rear of the passage is early C19 open well staircase
with cut string, stick balusters, curtail step and wreathed handrail. Roof timbers
are C20 A-frame.
