Farmhouse. Probably early or mid C16 origins with major late C16 and C17
improvements, modernised circa 1970. Exposed local stone and flint rubble; stone
rubble and cob stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan and development: 4-room-and-through-passage plan house facing south-east. At
the left (south-west) end was a small unheated inner room but the partition between
it and the hall has been removed to unite the 2 rooms. The hall has an axial stack
backing onto the site of the former passage. Here the lower passage screen has been
removed and the passage rear doorway blocked. Right of the passage is a service end
kitchen and at the right end there is an C18 or C19 1-room plan extension. These 2
service end rooms have an axial stack between.
Since the roof has been replaced it is not possible to determine the early
development of the house. Nevertheless it seems likely that the house began as some
form of open hall house. This house was progressively floored over and the
fireplaces were inserted in more than one stages in the late C16 and first half of
the C17. In the C18 or C19 the house was divided into cottages and a fourth room
added. It was reunited to a single house in the C20. The house is 2 storeys.
Exterior: irregular 5-window front of C20 hardwood casements containing rectangular
panes of leaded glass. Three of the first floor windows are half dormers. The
passage front doorway is left of centre and it contains a C20 segmental arch headed
doorframe and plank door. Secondary former cottage doorway at the left end contains
a late C19 2-flap door. Right of centre a ragged join shows between the service end
kitchen and the extension. In the rear wall there are a couple of C17 oak-framed
windows with chamfered mullions, a 3-light window to the kitchen and a 2-light
window over the blocked passage doorway.
Interior: in the service end kitchen the crossbeams are C20 replacements. The
fireplace here is probably early C17. It has a front oak frame with chamfered
surround and lambstongue stops. It has an oven each side. The fireplace is now
lined with brick but a cob stack is suspected here. In the chamber above a
fireplace was inserted in the early C18. It is built of hand-made small bricks, has
a chamfered oak lintel and hearth of upended slate. The hall fireplace is Beerstone
ashlar with a chamfered oak lintel and includes a seat one side. The crossbeam here
is chamfered with roll stops. The roof has been mostly rebuilt but one A-frame
truss with a mortised and tenoned collar remains; it is probably early C17. The
rest of the roof was rebuilt probably in the C19 although the trusses are made up
from reused C17 roof timbers. Thorn is one of a particularly attractive group of
listed buildings which make up the hamlet of Farway.
