Post office and post master's house. Late C16 - early C17 with some late C19 and
C20 modernisations. Plastered local stone and flint rubble (exposed at the north-
east end); stone rubble stacks, one topped with stone rubble and another with C20
brick; thatch roof.
Plan: 3-room-and-through-passage plan house facing north-west. The service end
room, at the left (north-east) end, is unheated. The hall has an axial kitchen
stack backing onto the passage and a newel stair rising against the front wall next
to the passage. The inner room has a gable-end stack with a winder stair rising
alongside. This room now includes the post office. As far as can be seen this is a
single phase house including the hall floor. 2 storeys.
Exterior: irregular front fenestration with 3 ground floor windows and 2 first
floor windows. The central ground floor window is an oak 3-light window with ovolo-
moulded mullions. The window above is contemporary and has chamfered oak mullions,
one of which is now missing. The rest are C20. The passage front doorway is left
of centre and contains a C20 part-glazed plank door. Another doorway near the right
end containing a similar door has been inserted to the post office/inner room. The
roof is half-hipped to left and gable-ended to right.
Interior: the passage and service end room were renovated circa 1965 and most of
the carpentry detail is covered up. The crossbeam in the service end room has been
replaced with an RSJ. The hall newel stair has solid oak treads. The large hall
fireplace is Beerstone ashlar with chamfered oak lintel and it includes a side oven.
Both the crossbeam here and another in the inner room are chamfered with lambstongue
stops. Full height close-studded oak framed crosswall between hall and inner room
parlour which has a Beerstone ashlar fireplace with chamfered oak lintel. The first
floor includes a couple of original oak crank-headed doorframes. The roof is
carried on a series of clean side-pegged jointed cruck trusses.
The Post Office is one of a group of attractive listed buildings which make up the
hamlet of Farway.
