Cottage. Early or mid C17, renovated circa 1970. Plastered local stone and flint
rubble with some cob; stone rubble stack topped with C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: 2-room plan cottage facing south-west and end onto the lane. The larger
right (south-east) room has an axial stack backing onto the left room and a newel
stair turret projecting from the front wall. Front entrance into the left room.
This appears to be an intact small C17 house. 2 storeys.
Exterior: irregular 2-window of C20 casements containing rectangular panes of
leaded glass. The 2-window rear section contains 3 original oak-framed windows with
chamfered mullions. The first floor ones are half dormers and the left one contains
some old diamond panes of leaded glass. The ground floor one is unglazed with C20
glass in front. The front doorway now contains a C20 door and the eaves have been
brought down over as a hood. The main roof is half-hipped each end.
Interior: although the ceiling of the left room is carried on replacement joists
the interior is otherwise remarkably well-preserved. Between the 2 rooms is an
original oak Tudor arch doorway and there are contemporary doorframes to the stair
and between the main first floor chambers. All have chamfered surrounds and some
still have scroll stops. Some also contain ancient plank doors. The fireplace is
stone rubble and its oak lintel is chamfered with elongated scroll stops, the same
finish as the crossbeam in the same room. Roof of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-
jointed collars.
Saddlecombe is a very well-preserved example of a small C17 house, a remarkably rare
survival. It is also one of a group of attractive listed buildings which make up
the hamlet of Farway.
