Farmhouse. C16 or earlier E wing, hall range rebuilt and W wing probably
built in early C17, interior modernised in early C18 with internal
chimney rebuilt to allow through passage from front door to new
staircase in rear of W wing. C19 brick lean-to at E end rear extensions.
Timber frame roughcast with steep old red tile roofs. Red brick slated
lean-to at E. A large, 2 storeys and cellar, H-plan house facing S with
entrance to through passage next W wing and large external red brick
chimney on outer side of each crosswing, the W one with 2 diagonally set
square shafts. S front has 2-windows wide centre between projecting
gabled wings with one window each on each floor. Small glazed gables
give extra light over upper windows of centre. 3-lights flush casement
windows. Dripboards continuous at floor level. Entrance through lean-to
porch. Interior has exposed frame and floors carried by axial beams.
Older E wing has partitioned narrower 3rd bay at rear now a stair and
kitchen. Deeply chamfered crossbeams without stops carry the floor.
Swept jowls to posts and double-curved tension braces. Open truss
between other 2 bays with chamfered curved braces and clasped-purlin
roof on truss with collar. Edge-halved scarf joint in wallplate with
bridled butts. Roof of hall range of 2-bays with narrow
chimney-and-entrance bay at W. Deep cambered chamfered tie-beam to
central truss infilled above. Side-purlin roof with straight
wind-braces. Cut string early C18 staircase with carved brackets to
tread-ends and 2 turned balusters to each tread. Turned newels and
moulded swept handrail. Early C18 corner cupboard in room to E of
entrance has dentilled cornice fielded panels to doors, and fluted band
at dado height. Moulded dado moulding and skirting. Several 2-panels
doors with case locks and HL hinges. S end of E lean-to contains a well
and cast iron trestle and winding gear.
