House. Early C16 open hall house; heightened and floors and
central chimney inserted mid Cl7, later Cl7 2-storeys porch and
rear stair turret. Late Cl7 N dairy wing; extended to RH in mid
C20 and beyond dairy in 1970's. Originally a 3-cell building
with open hall flanked by bays of one and a half storeys for
parlour at S and service at N. Timber frame, weatherboarded on
ground floor with pargetting above. Steep hipped old red tile
roof. A long, 2-storeys, 3-cell, central-chimney, lobby-entry
plan house facing W. Red brick chimney stepped on plan. Later
small N gable chimney. S bay C20. Entry now direct into hall to
N of chimney with chamfered and ogee stopped cross-beam. Axial
beam to parlour on S of chimney and to Service room at N end. 5
windows W front including porch window. Window inserted in old
doorway and new door to left. Interior has old wallplates and
principal posts remaining at NW, NE and SE corners of hall. Open
fireplace with lintol in hall has a pointed recess at the back.
Winding stair round square newel with carved finial. Old boarded
doors with iron hinges. Face-halved bladed scarf joints in rear
upper wallplate. Boxed in fireplace to chamber over parlour said
to have 3-centred chamfered stone surround. Called Cutten Hill
in lease of 1702 (RCHM Typescript).
