Inn, now a private house. Late C16 or early C17, C17 S part and central
chimney, C19 brick front and bay window to bar. Timber frame largely
replaced in red brick painted externally. Steep old red tile roofs. A
2-storeys, 3 windows long, building facing E onto street. 2 cells,
internal-chimney, lobby-entry plan. Narrow structural bay in middle with
space for former stair by stack. E front has a pair of recessed sash
windows on LH and a single one to RH arch with 3/3 panes. Door in
middle, 4 panels flush-beaded, with flat hood on shaped brackets. Large
hip-roofed tiled projection to LH with continuous glazing and canted
return to door. Segmental bow window on RH. Interior has timber frame
exposed on 1st floor in front range, chamfered axial beams to ground
floor with hollow stops at N but ogee stops to S room. Large
back-to-back fireplaces with chamfered lintels and hollow stops. Timber
frame to rear stair lean-to. Framed rear wall exposed in rear outshut.
Raking braces to central post of S end wall. Posts remain in external
brick walls. Squint-butted scarf joint in wallplate at rear. Straight
tie-beam with queen-struts to clasped-purlin roof in N part. Inserted
attic floor with axial chamfered beam and squared joists. Structural
difference in S part of house with raking queen struts in later S part
and 1st floor ceilings intended to be plastered with axial beam. Bigger
fireplace lintel to N room on ground floor (re-used timber on S). (RCHM
