House. Possibly C14 with late C16 and C17 alterations. Timber-framing
with some brick infill and tile roof. Hall and north cross-wing form an
L-plan. South cross-wing added in C17 to form half-H plan, with parallel
wing of same build against east wall of hall. Two storeys: East wall has,
at the left, the two gables of the south cross-wing and the parallel wing.
Each is of one bay and is framed in square panels. At the junction of the
two wings is a gabled porch: The gable of the north cross-wing, at the
right, has a C20 bay window on the ground floor. On the first floor are
two curved tension braces. The truss has a king-strut and two curved struts
between tie-beam and collar. Chimneys on right-hand return wall of wing
projecting from hall, and on main ridge in line with doorway. Interior:
the base of one cruck truss is visible in front of the inglenook fireplace
in the hall. The inserted ceiling has a chamfered spine beam: The chamfered
common joists are laid flat and are supported by clamps attached to the outer
walls. In the attic the tops of the cruck blades are visible: they are joined
by a yoke and are smoke-blackened. A truss at the junction with the cross-
wing has smoke-blackened principals. This is not fully visible and it is not
clear whether it is a cruck.
