House. Early C19, probably a remodelling of an earlier house. Whitewashed rendered
cob on stone rubble footings, some framing to the first floor of the main block
(information from owner) ; slate roof (formerly thatched), hipped at ends ; right end
stack, left end stack with dismantled shaft.
Plan: L plan, the main block with 2 principal rooms at the front, one on either side
of a through passage, with a rear left wing containing the stair (to the rear of the
passage) and a rear service room. Single storey C20 kitchen in angle between wing
and main block replacing an earlier single storey kitchen ; former stable adjoining
end of rear wing. Although the visible details are circa 1820, the thick walls of
the main block suggest that an earlier 2 room plan house was the basis of the early
C19 building.
Exterior: Set back from the road with a deep garden at front and back. 2 storeys.
Symmetrical 3-bay front with a 1920s gabled porch, a panelled front door and small-
pane early C19 timber sash windows, 3 to the first floor, 2 to the ground floor. 3
sash windows on the left return which has a side door into an axial passage.
Interior: Early C19 joinery and carpentry including a stick baluster stair with a
mahogany ramped handrail and bobbin-turned newel post ; C20 chimneypiece.
Roof: Collar rafter roof trusses to the main block with pegs and metal fixings, the
wing is roofed with conventional early C19 king post and strut trusses.
A very unspoiled house, attractively sited in the centre of the village.
