Description

BICKINGTON
SX 87 SW
8/2 Pigsties at Bickington Barton,
- about 3 metres south-east of
house

GV II

Row of pigsties with storage loft above. Probably early or mid C19. Devonian
limestone rubble. Corrugated-iron roof. Consists of 4 sties with a room of unknown
function at the north end. In front of the 4 sties on the west side is a raised
feeding walk with a low stone parapet; access to it is by a short flight of stone
steps on the north. Above it the roof is carried out on horizontal beams to form a
canopy. Each sty has a window-like opening onto the walk, its lower part occupied
by a granite trough. Access to the sties is by 4 doors on the east side. The
northern room has a doorway on the west side and there is a plank door with
wrought-iron strap-hinges in the north gable, giving access to the storage loft.
Roof-trusses appear to be original, with collars pegged to the faces of the
principal rafters. A long narrow building, similar in shape to this one, is shown
in the same position on the 1841 tithe map (Devon Record Office).
