13/61 Terrace walls and gazebo to
north of Sevillowes
GV II
Terrace walls and gazebo. Late C18. Ashlar and coursed rubble
limestone. Retaining walls to terraces on 3 levels, upper level
with gazebo. Curved gable to gazebo with central ogee doorway and
flanking windows in Gothick style. Ogee quatrefoil panel centrally
above. Flanking round arched niches. Irregular arrangement of
terracing bends at centre with various flights of stone steps
affording access to the levels. Part of upper terrace rebuilt in
brick with row of 3 round arched recesses with keystones. Two
round arched recesses on lower level, one with small oven and flue
at back. On lower level one arch infilled to create small room
with doorway and small side window. Terracing used for setting up
of cloth drying racks, recesses presumably used for storage in poor
weather. The best example of this arrangement in Chalford,
apparently also serving as garden for the clothier.
