Two gazebos with linking terrace. c1850, by Lewis Vulliamy for W.J. Phelps.
Ashlar marlstone with limestone dressings; stone slate roof. Gothic Revival. Gazebos
face each other along length of terrace and are linked by terrace backing wall. Each
gazebo has large central opening with pierced stonework to gable over. Gable contains
large trefoil with oculus over. Pair of plain pilasters either side of opening, each
pair with round-ended recessed panel between. Ball finials to capping of pilasters;
continuous moulded cornice to parapet. Front and side parapet gables have pyramidal
spear stone finials. Trefoil-headed lancet to garden side of each gazebo; round-
arched doorway with 4-panel door opening through backing wall from within each gazebo.
linking marlstone wall articulated by limestone piers with pyramid spear stone
finials (many missing at time of survey, August 1985). Some tufa stone used in front
face of terrace dwarf wall. An exotic example of early Victorian Gothic Revival.
Chestal house itself is in Dursley CP.
