Description

SOUTH CERNEY CERNEY WICK
SU 09 NE
9/219 Cerney Wick Mill and adjoining
House, known as The Mill
II
Former mill and adjoining house. Mill probably of late C18, house
possibly of late C17 extended in Cl9. Mill reputed to have been on
this site since Domesday. Mill of coursed rubble stone,
corrugated-iron roof, brick end stack on house side. Two storey
single block with scattered fenestration, renewed to rear, with
original timber lintels. Beam ends set into walls. Doorway to far
left on rear, stable door nearly central to front with additional
door directly above. Some cast-iron columns support first floor
inside. Hole for mill wheel still in situ although wheel has gone.
House of rubble stone partially faced in roughcast, stone slate
roof, brick ridge stack, and brick stacks to C19 wing. Single main
range with small projecting rear gabled wing just off centre and
C19 rear wing to end with adjacent slate-roofed lean-to. Rear has
some original leaded casements with timber lintel. Front altered
probably in C19 with 3 paired casements on first floor, 3-light
below, and small gabled porch to right of centre.
