House. c1840 for the Devonshire estate, probably by Joseph
Paxton. Italianate style. Coursed squared sandstone and
ashlar. Overhanging hipped and gabled roofs, the moulded eaves
on paired brackets. Fishscale stone slates. Two ashlar lateral
stacks. Irregular plan and elevations. One and two storeys.
North elevation of three bays. Low projecting bay to left has a
pair of sashes divided by a mullion. Bracketed hoodmould. In
the return angle to the right is a lean-to porch with shallow
basket arch to north and west , springing from stepped impost
blocks. Hoodmoulds. To the right again a sash window with
vertical glazing bars. Bracketed hoodmould. Above are a pair
of casements divided by a stone mullion and with a continuous
bracketed sill. Similar single light window to left. East
elevation has projecting bay to left with pedimented gable.
Round-arched window to ground floor with hoodmould and bracketed
sill. To the right a top hung casement. Two 2-light casements
above with bracketed sills.
