School, now community hall, and house. After 1849. Possibly by George
Webster. Dressed limestone with sandstone ashlar dressings and slate roof.
School of one storey and 4 bays, the 1st bay projects under gable, 3rd bay
breaks forward under gable. House of 2 storeys to left return. Rock-faced
stone base and quoins. School has sill course. 1st bay has 5-light double-
chamfered-mullioned window, the central 3 lights higher with transom, and label;
upper triangular-headed light. 3rd bay has 3-light window similar to that to
1st bay. 2 windows to 2nd bay, that to left is small, over porch, that to right
is tall, cutting sill course, both with chamfered reveals and C20 casements.
4th bay has 2 tall windows cutting sill course with C20 casements. Large C20
re-entrant hipped porch. Cross-axial stack with octagonal shafts. Right return
has window as 1st bay of front. House has single bay to front with hipped roof
and gablet to 1st floor window with plain bargeboards. Windows have label
moulds to lintels and 2-light casements with iron glazing bars, in octagon and
square pattern common to the Holker estate, one light to ground floor window now
has plate glass. Left return of 3 bays, the 1st bay part of school, 2nd bay
projects under gable, 3rd bay has C20 lean-to porch. Windows mostly as to
front; 1st bay has large 4-light casement with transom and plain glazing with
gabled dormer to 1st floor; 3rd bay has gablet to 1st floor window. C20 lean-to
porch to 1st bay. Cross-axial stack and valley stack as above. Rear has gabled
bay with 5-light window as to front; truncated lateral stack and lean-to
outshut.
