Market house, now offices. 1898, by William Huckvale, built by public
subscription on site presented by Lord Rothschild when former Market
House in front of Church demolished. Open ground floor enclosed after
1910. Timber frame formerly open ground floor with oak posts on moulded
stone bases, jettied half-timbered 1st floor with roughcast panels and
steep red tile roof, central cupola and finial. Half-timbered infill to
ground floor and doors to High Street. Lower 2-storeys part at S end
with red brick gable chimney. Entrance and stair on W side of High
Street frontage giving access to Council Chamber on 1st floor with large
rectangular 6-light oriel window on that end, 6-light large transomed
leaded window below gable in middle of E side. Includes No. 61 High
Street. (Kelly(1914)250).
