Railway tunnel entrance. 1849 for Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire
Railway. Engineer, Sir John Hawkshaw. Red brick with sandstone ashlar
dressings. Gothic Revival style. Retaining wall with square end-turrets
and central tunnel entrance flanked by attached cylindrical towers. Boldly-
moulded horse-shoe-arched tunnel entrance beneath projecting coped parapet
supported on shaped brackets. 4-stage flanking towers have splayed bases
with round arched doorways, moulded bands, arrow slits, round-headed splayed
slits and projecting coped parapets on brackets. End turrets have plinth,
flat-headed splayed slits and similar projecting parapets.
