The Malthouse

House. Probably C18 with C19 and later alterations. Sandstone rubble and
brick with timber-frame. Tiled roof with sandstone rubble and brick stacks.
Rectangular plan of seven or eight structural bays aligned roughly east/west.
Two storeys and attic. South elevation has two raking-top dormers, each with
a 2-light late C19 casement, to left-hand side over C19 brick extension. Ground
floor of brick extension has two early C19 wooden casements each of three lights,
between which is a glazed early C19 porch. Rubble part, probably C18 is to
centre and right. This has two first floor 2-light mid-C19 casements and a
blocked opening to the right. Ground floor has three similar irregularly placed
casements to ground floor. Entry to extreme right side , which is curved slightly
back from the rest of frontage, with mid-C20 ledged door. West gable has rough-
cast finish. North elevation has two sandstone rubble and brick stacks and cat-
slide lean-to. Interior has a variety of trusses in C18 part. Two have curved
raking struts, and others interrupted tie-beams. C19 part has collar trusses.
Some timber-framed walling. Ground floor rooms have ceiling beams with straight-
cut chamfer stops. Included for group value.
