Barn and cow house. C18 with mid-C19 alterations and additions. Barn:
timber-framed, weatherboarded on sandstone rubble plinth with plain tiled
and corrugated iron roof. Three framed bays aligned east/west; central
wagon bay with opposed cart entries and double doors. Framing: two
rectangular panels from sill to wall-plate, the upper row of which is smaller,
long straight lower, corner braces; end collar and tie-beam trusses have
five struts beneath collar and V-strut above; intermediate tie-beam trusses
have two raking struts; two tiers of trenched purlins. Cow house: rubble
with brick dressings, plain tiled roof, Two levels with dentilled eaves
cornice. L-plan; three-bay part adjoins east gable end of barn and has
four-bay south return at east end; openings have cambered heads; three-bay
part has two 3-light windows, a rectangular light and two doors facing the
farmyard; to the left external steps lead up to a loft door; four-bay return
has two 3-light windows, a 2-light window and three doors facing farmyard.
It was probably once a shelter shed as three bullnosed brick piers are visible
in the walling. Interior: roof has three intermediate king-post trusses.
At the south gable end is an additional brick bay with a small fireplace.
The barn and cow house enclose the farmyard to the north and east and both
face Hill Farmhouse (qv) to the south-west.
