- The Old Dairy

House. Late C17 ('HL/RE/169?' on front plaque), renovated in C18 and
C19. Red brick in Flemish bond with tie-beam exposed in E gable and
timber framed W gable triangle. Steep pitched roof with rear catslide to
outshut, now slated. A 2-storeys and attic house facing S with E end to
road. Single storey tiled end extensions set back to line with the rear
outshut. S front has a plastered plinth, floor-band, 2 windows to each
floor, and a rustic gabled porch to plank door in middle with segmental
arch. 3-light flush casements with flat gauged arches, and small panes.
Date plaque over porch. E end has a small C18 lattice window on RH to
attic. Small blocked similar window on LH and partly covered by very
large external E gable chimney with chamfered offsets. Later small W
gable chimney. The E extension may be original having a chamfered
plinth, English bond in lower part, 2-light plate casement window and
plank door. This has in its rear wall a large brick oven, fireplace, and
copper. It is entered from the house via the dairy in the rear outshut.
The staircase also rises in the outshut. The larger E room has a cased
axial beam. The wall between house and outshut has brick panels between
thin timber studs which suggests the outshut is original. Chamfered
axial beam to W room, where the external W chimney and fireplace, and
the separate stair in the outshut may have been inserted in C19. The
oven was in use 60 years ago. (RCHM Typescript).
