C1820 early Calthorpe Estate villa antedating Wellington Road with entrance
front overlooking original approach from Bristol Road. A substantial stucco
villa of 2 storeys 5 bays with 3 bay entrance front to east end. Former
coach house abuts west end. Plinth and first floor sill band. Hipped
slate roof with flat bracketed eaves; corniced stucco chimney stacks.
East entrance front has revealed glazing bar sashes, tall on ground floor
with later marginal glazing. Elegant, broad porch of 2 pairs of Tuscan
columns, entablature with centre panel and flat eaves cornice similar to
eaves of villa proper. Reeded corner block architrave doorcase, panelled
reveals and panelled and glazed door. Five bay north front with plain
glazing bar sashes and secondary doorway in architrave surround with consoles
supporting cornice. South garden front has revealed glazing bar sashes in
eared architrave surrounds with cornices. Break for entrance front return
has addition of sun lounge with marginal glazed French casements in keeping
original round headed marginal glazed ground floor window. The coach house
abutting west end and extending to boundary wall with road is of painted
brick with dentil eaves to hipped slate roof, surmounted by gracefully
arcaded cupola with lead dome ball finial and weathervane. Interior
retains original simple Regency mouldings, corner block architrave
doorcases. Plain but good staircase, cut string, slightly fluted
bannisters, continuous moulded handrail.
