4 almshouses. 1847 with additions and alterations c.1970.
Erected at the charge of Thomas Frewen. Tudor Revival style.
Random granite rubble and brick with ashlar dressings and slate
roofs. Chamfered plinth, moulded coped parapet, coped gables
with kneelers and finials, shouldered coped gabled dormers, 4
coped brick ridge stacks. 2 storeys, 5 bays. Symmetrical front
has a projecting gabled central bay flanked by lower wings.
Central triple plain lancet, and above it, a recessed panel
inscribed 'The Rev. Stanley Burrough's Almshouses erected by
Thomas Frewen esq of Brickwall, Sussex AD 1847'. Above again, a
double lancet and above it, a panel containing a shield. Beyond,
on either side, a chamfered 4 centred arched doorway flanked by
single 2 light mullioned casements and beyond, a similar doorway.
The windows have flat heads and the doorways weather-stripped
plank doors. Beyond again, a single storey C20 brick addition.
Above, on either side, 2 dormers each with a 2 light mullioned
casement. Rear has a full width C20 lean-to addition with 4
doors and 7 casements.
