6.6.61 Tolethorpe Hall
GV II*
Country house, late C16 or early C17, central part remodelled C18 and south wings
altered c.1867 (date on brackets of rainwater heads). Of ashlar and coursed rubble
with Collyweston stone slate roofs and moulded stone ridge stacks. H-plan. Main
facade to north, with 2 large projecting cross-gabled wings to south. Two storeys
and attics. North facade 1-4-1 with gabled projections to either end. Westernmost
bay has mullioned windows with hollow chamfers. Adjacent to west gable is altered
C17 ashlar porch with coped gable and finial, and semi-circular headed entrance arch
within fluted pilasters and entablature. Four-light window and blank plaque above.
Windows to central and east parts C18 and C19. Moulded cornice to central part.
South face of central part has moulded cornice and parapet, stringcourse, raised
architraves with keystones to windows and semi-circular headed entrance at the
west. South wings taller and with coped gables east and west. Two storey C19
rectangular bay window to each, with Gothic traceried parapet and dormer above. C19
west wing partly demolished 1983.
