CUERDALE,
ROACH BRIDGE
Darwen Side Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse, dated 1619 but enlarged C18 and c.1900. Stone with slate roof. L-shaped plan with rear extension. Two storeys and four bays, with stable door in 1st bay and house door in 3rd bay; apart from the first, all openings are chamfered with hoodmoulds, and the windows are sashed. Better masonry to 4th bay at ground floor, where was formerly a 4-light window shows it to be original; although heightened in C18, this section now appears uniform with the even higher left hand end of late C19. Datestone at right end at 1st floor level, lettered in relief: E T 1619 with rampant beast (lion?) between the letters. In right hand return wall is an original 2-light double chamfered stone mullion window. Wing at rear, of masonry similar to 4th bay, has 2 C18 chamfered stone mullion windows.
