7/75 Lower Top o'th' Bank Farmhouse
-
- II
Farmhouse substantially late C18 but incorporating datestones of 1682
and 1681 in rear wall; now house; with attached barn at right end.
House is 3 bays and 2 storeys and barn continued to right is 3 bays; front
wall of watershot coursed sandstone, rear wall of random rubble (house)
and coursed sandstone with quoins (barn), roof of slate (house), and stone
slate (barn). House has 3 stepped triple-light windows on each floor and
plain doorway between the 2nd and 3rd bays; barn has large round-headed
wagon entrances opposed in middle bay, an inserted window to the left and
a doorway altered as a window at the right end. Rear wall of house appears
to have been raised, the upper level consisting of watershot coursed
blocks; doorway has humped lintel with crudely incised lettering
"1681 HM RH", and at the junction with the barn, which steps out, another
datestone partly obscured by the barn wall has raised lettering "1682".
Interior: altered, but through-passage suggests early original plan;
3rd bay has vaulted cellar with well and keeping stone.
