3/13 Netherwood Cottage
and Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse, now farmhouse and cottage. Perhaps early C17, altered and
partly rebuilt or remodelled in C18. Mostly large sandstone blocks brought
to courses, with quoins, but front of farmhouse (now main range) of
watershot coursed squared masonry; stone slate roof. Elongated T-shaped
plan; cottage at right hand end projects to front and rear and is probably
the service end of house subsequently rebuilt and now of 3 bays. Two
storeys; principal features of interest are windows with recessed
ovolo-and-fillet moulded mullions: in west gable wall 4-lights on each
floor, both with hoodmoulds (lower blocked and now covered by lean-to
car-port roof, upper lacking one mullion with other 2 lights blocked), and
at rear 5 lights at ground floor (lacking 1st and 4th mullions) and 4
lights above. Front of cottage has inserted door and window at ground
floor and 2-light window above, lacking the mullion. Rear wall of
farmhouse appears to continue some masonry as cottage. Chimneys at both
gables and on ridge. Other external features of less interest. Interior:
party wall between farmhouse and cottage has remains of 2 chamfered
doorways; cottage has partly exposed roof truss with punched carpenter's
mark "11' on principal.
