Church. 1840, probably by Edmund Sharpe. Squared sandstone, stone slate
roof. Nave with short chancel, west steeple. Early English style.
Three-span roof (belying single vessel interior); pilaster buttresses
making 5 bays on south side, 4 on north side, the westernmost with small
lancets at upper level (lighting the staircases), the others all with tall
coupled lancets; east end has stepped triple lancet to chancel, single
lancet each side (north side terminated at 4th bay). At west end 2-stage
tower is partly embraced by pseudo-aisles (which are gabled), has 2-centred
arched west door, 2 lancets above, gables on each side, octagonal drum and
belfry with a lancet in each side, and short octagonal spire.
Interior: except for porch incorporated in tower and staircases each side,
and chancel and organ house at east end, a single vessel with flat ceiling
supported by very slim iron columns rising through (panelled) galleries on
3 sides; galleries approached by 1/4-turn staircases with stick balusters
and ramped handrails; chamfered 2-centred chancel arch and matching arch to
organ house on south side; brass double candelabra attached to frieze of
gallery; pitch pine pews at ground floor, box pews in gallery. Unusually
unaltered example of early C19 church.
