Bank and attached bank chambers. C1900. Red ashlar sandstone on granite plinth;
above ground floor is brick and terracotta under Westmorland slate roof. 2 storeys
and attic, 6 bays to King St. and 5 bays to Downing St. on right return; 2-storey,
3-bay bank chambers to rear, face Downing St. and are set behind iron-railed
forecourt. Main facade: doorway on right has band-rusticated pilasters and
archivolt with keystone under segmental pediment on foliated consoles. To left are
5 refenestrated openings divided by attached Doric columns set on the granite
plinth; later sign beneath cornice. 1st floor: moulded sills and cavetto surrounds
to round-headed windows divided by small triangular piers; foliated spandrels with
cartouches; frieze with lozenges beneath cornice having triangular projections at
each pier. Parapet interrupted by bay-2 dormer having 2-light window under frieze
cornice and ball-finialled gable. Bays 3-6 have similar window under large shaped
gable bearing coat of arms under segmental pediment with ball finials. Projecting
end stack on left. Right return: generally as front; the ground floor with
tripartite and 2-light openings, 2 roof dormers.
Bank Chambers: round-arched 4-panel door on left and scattered fenestration beneath
2 half-dormers with arched 2-light windows.
