LEIGH WILD'S PASSAGE

No 5
II
Weaver's house and topshop. c 1800, altered. Red brick in Flemish bond, stone
slate roof. 3 storeys, 2 bays; double depth plan. Central 6-panelled door and
overlight with radial glazing bars in wooden doorcase having ribbed pilasters.
Flanking window openings have projecting stone sills and wedge lintels. 1st and 2nd
floor windows are similar; those to 1st floor have remains of sashes. Truncated
brick end stacks to front roof slope and to rear-right slope.
Rear: altered fenestration; part of 2nd-floor walling removed at time of survey.
Interior not inspected but said to have internal staircase leading directly to the
top floor which is a single space that is likely to have been a weaving shop
associated either with the cotton or short-lived silk industry in Leigh. If so it
is believed to be the only specialised weaving premises surviving in the Wigan area.
