Mid-18th Century. Two storeys, basement and dormers.
Seven windows wide including central 3-window canted bay.
Later 3-window extension to east.
Brown brick with stone dressings.
Slate roofs.
Stepped door surround framing round-arched opening. Centre ground floor window of
bay with balustraded apron, round-arched sash in shaped architrave and bracketed
open pediment. The bay flanked by windows with crossette architrave, frieze,
cornice and pediment. Windows of the extension also have the full entablature but
only the centre tripartite window pedimented.
Continuous plinth, cillband and, above first floor, cyma-bracketed cornice.
Splayed faces of bay have recessed roundels, each housing a bust: one Shakespeare,
one Milton. Parapet with coping.
Mansard roof.
Higher parapet masks hipped roof of extension.
Stacks with oversailing courses.
GLC blue plaque erected 1977. Commemorates residence of John Walter, founder of
the Times newspaper.
