Monmouth Chambers)
ST 7748 SE 5/56 GV formerly listed
22.7.49 as No 4)
II*

2.
Late C17. 2 storeys and attic, and 3 storeys and attic. Rubble built. 4 bays.
Pantile roof. 2 gables, the left hand one original with coping and parapet; the
right hand one to dormer above timber-framed plastered 2nd floor of No 3B (about
1700). No 3 has a 3-light attic window with drip below gable. To 3B has a 2-
light moulded wood mullion attic window and 2 cross-mullion windows on 2nd floor
(the left hand one part original) formerly with wooden drips. On the 1st floor,
3 light mullion and transom windows with drips, one with relieving arch. The
ground floor of No 3 has modern shop front and plain entrance with part of drip
mould over. No 3B has plain central entrance with drip and plain flanking modern
shop windows with drips over (position of relieving arches above indicates earlier
arrangement). Residual gable to left of parapet, formerly a 3-gable house (of
print in Wine Street museum). Gabled C17 2 storey and attic extension to rear with
2 ashlar chimneys; gable end 2-light mullion window. Stair gable in angle.
Interior: very interesting 1st floor ceiling decoration of circa 1650. Principal
room has vine scroll, sheild and griffin frieze, and a plaster foiled pattern on
ceiling. 2 gothick fireplaces. Newel stair from 1st floor with heavy later C17
handrail, straight string, turned balusters and 'pagoda'-newels to landing.
Coved ceiling to part of 2nd floor. Further attic above north part with stop-
moulded ovolo surround to door: this part is a later timber-framed addition.
This house may well have been where Monmouth stayed during his retreat in June
1685.
