Farmhouse. Probably C17, cased in brick in early C19 with later
additions and alterations. Orange red brick probably concealing timber
frame, plain tile roof. Long central range with projecting gabled
wings to left and right. 2 storeys; 1:2:1 bays, windows all 3- and
4-light C20 casements, those to projecting wings and ground floor of
central range with segmental heads; entrance through half-glazed
door under late C19 gabled brick porch in angle between main range
and right wing; prominent red brick ridge stack to left of centre on
main range with external lateral stacks (left truncated) to projecting
wings. Single-storey mid-C19 gritstone kitchen range at right-angles
to rear on left. Interior: chamfered spine beam to main range with
straight-cut chamfer stops and heavy joists, right wing also has
chamfered spine beam with ogee chamfer stops to joists; left wing
has central slightly cambered collar and tie beam truss exposed
upstairs but the roof has been raised. Forge Farmhouse is a substantial
building occupying a prominent position in the village.
