II*
Farmhouse. Probably early C17 with mid-to late C19 alterations and
additions. Rendered timber frame on coursed sandstone rubble plinth
with plastered and red brick infill; coursed sandstone rubble C19
addition; slate roofs. Hall range of 11 framed bays with projecting
gabled cross-wing of 3 framed bays to north-west and 2-storey gabled
porch to south-west; C19 kitchen wing at rear to north-east. 2 storeys.
Framing: closely-spaced uprights with middle rail and long straight
tension braces. Hall range jettied on 3 sides, probably underbuilt in
brick to south-west; cross-wing probably has underbuilt jetty to front
too. Central brick ridge stack (lower part with section of triangular
projection but top part rebuilt) and integral brick end stack to rear
wing. South-west front: ground-floor C19 three-light wooden casement
to right; 2-storey gabled porch off-centre to right has jettied first
floor with moulded bressumer, first-floor C19 two-light wooden casement,
and entrance with 6-panelled door within (lower 2 panels flush and top
panels glazed); short catslide roof over staircase outshut to left of
porch in angle of cross-wing with C19 two-light wooden landing window
and small basement window; cross-wing to left with C19 two-light- wooden
casement on each floor. First-floor C19 two-light wooden casement in
right-hand gable end and to rear of cross-wing. Interior: ground-
floor room to right has chamfered cross-beamed ceiling with ogee stops,
chamfered dragon beams, and large plain joists; large open fireplace
with early C19 surround and cast iron range; chamfered beams in cross-
wing. It-has been suggested (V.C.H.) that this house was probably
built for Richard Bagot shortly after 1623 when he purchased this part
of the Williams estate. V.C.H., Vol. VIII, pp. 193-4.
