7/56 The Brick House
GV II
House. Late C18, extended or partly rebuilt mid-C19 with later additions
and alterations. Red brick on sandstone plinth to 2 left bays and on brick
plinth to right bay; graded slate roof with stack behind ridge to right
and integral end stack to left. L-plan with wide gabled range at right-
angles to rear on left and right bay of main range (see straight joint)
either a mid-C19 extension or a rebuilding of an earlier bay. 3 storeys
with plastered moulded eaves cornice. 3-window front; glazing bar sashes
(16-paned to ground floor) with segmental heads altered to form gauged wedge
lintels; reduced proportions to second floor with fluted keystones to stone
lintels to left and centre bays. Central entrance; plain open-pedimented
pilastered doorcase with semi-circular fanlight, panelled reveals and C20
panelled door. Light timber frame (horizontal panels) to back wall to
C18 part with possible earlier wall-plate visible.
Wide gabled range to rear with integral end stack looks contemporary with
2 left bays of front (with which it is bonded) but cuts across blocked window
so must be later. Interior. Late C18 staircase immediately behind entrance
with carved newel posts and stick balusters. C18 and C19 panelled doors.
