1897 by G. C. Oliver of Carlisle. Irregular plan on island site at end of
Fore Street. 3 storeys. Apsidal to Fore Street, under 3 window gable ended
front to Cattlemarket. Complex elevations.
Cattlemarket front: Raised surrounds to ground floor windows with architraves
and segmental pediments. 1st and 2nd floor windows have dividing strips with
strapwork tops. Casement windows, round headed on 1st floor, 2 light on 2nd
floor. Gable terminates with semi-circular pediment over tablet with 3 small
lights beneath.
East corner has 5 sided, 3 light oriel with bands of red sandstone over ornate
doorway (now window). Pepperpot dome. West corner also 5 sided with 3 lights,
and with sandstone bands. Pediments over windows. Former doorcase with decorative
lintel. Panelled chimney to left.
Sides taper to 2 storey semi-circular Fore Street front with overhanging eaves.
Carved frieze in red sandstone bearing sovereigns, shillings and pennies.
The Midland Bank forms part of group together with No 2 (Lloyds Bank) No 4 (Barclays
Bank), Priestpopple.
