(East side, off)
3/143 Charlton Hall
GV II*

Country house. Late C18, perhaps by William Newton. Tooled-and-margined
stone; Welsh slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays, symmetrical. Plinth, sill bands,
rusticated quoins and modillion eaves cornice. Panelled piers flank 5-step
approach to central old half-glazed door with 2-pane fanlight in raised
surround with keyed round arch, flanking 6-pane sashes and open pediment. 4
outer windows are longer 12-pane sashes, breaking sill band. 6-pane sashes
to 1st floor, that above door flanked by narrow 2-pane sashes; all windows in
architraves. Hipped roof with 2 ridge stacks, stepped-and-corniced with
panelled shafts. 4-bay returns with similar fenestration; plainer 3-bay
kitchen wing to rear left. Venetian stair window to rear, with radial head.

Interior: Venetian screen from entrance lobby to hall has archivolt key block
carved with convolvulus flowers. Dining room with fluted frieze, drawing
room with urn-and-anthemion frieze, library with palmette frieze; all rooms
have fielded-panel doors with overdoors matching the friezes, moulded cornices
and marble fireplaces with contemporary ironwork. Dog-leg stair with 2 stick
balusters per tread, moulded ramped and wreathed handrail, moulded newel,
curtail step and carved tread ends. Stair window with Ionic columns and
foliage frieze; Rococo ceiling rose above. Stairhead has segmental arch to
lobby above entrance. Bedrooms have fielded-panel doors, marble fireplaces
and moulded cornices.

An unusually complete and unaltered late Georgian interior.
