Watermill. Mid/late C18. Raised, altered and extended, bringing wheel under
cover, mid C19. Sandstone rubble and English bond brick; raised and extended in
Flemish bond brick of a different colour. Plain-tile roof. 2 storeys; 3-window
range. Irregular. Left part is of brick. Narrow opening to mill wheel on left.
Low opening, probably formerly to mill race, blocked with C19 bricks. Most
openings throughout have brick segmental arches. Window above has timber lintel.
Large blocked round arch opening has door inserted. First floor has 3-light
casement with horizontal glazing bar immediately above arch, and plank door.
Former cross gable is clearly visible in the brickwork. Lower right part retains
cross gable. Rubble and brick, with remnants of render. Doorway and small
opening. 3-light casement above. Roof collapsed. Rear, towards mill house (not
included), is of one storey due to fall of site. Left range has doorway and
window. Right range has former cross gable of rubble. C20 door. Interior: large
timber undershot wheel. Lower range has brick vaulted ground floor. The mill,
now disused, was entirely canal-fed. It is said by some to have been one of the
sources of inspiration for George Eliot's 'The Mill on the Floss'.
