Chapel Farmhouse
II
Former farmhouse. Early C17 with core of late C15 or early C16. A much-
altered 3-cell open hall house. Main hall range of 1 storey and attics, with
C17 2-storey cross-wing to left. Timber-framed and plastered. Plaintiled
roof with axial chimney of red brick, and gabled casement dormers. 2- and 3-
light casements and boarded entrance door, all of c.1980. The central open
hall is very depleted:- a pair of posts with fragmentary pilaster shafts once
supported a missing open truss; evidence in the framing remains for a pair of
arched service-room doorways. A floor was inserted over the hall and back-to-
back fireplaces placed between hall and parlour, probably in late C16. Major
C17 alterations include reconstruction of parlour cell to right, total
reroofing with butt purlins, and a 2-cell cross-wing beyond the earlier
service cell (the latter has many large members reused from the partial
demolition of the medieval house). Remodelled c.1980.
