Description

WINSTON THORPE LANE, ASHFIELD
TM 26 SW
2/149 Stable outbuilding, 20m
west of Barley House
Farmhouse

GV II

Outbuilding, c.1600. Probably built as a pair of stables with lofts above. 4
bays. Timber-framed and weatherboarded (originally plastered with wattle-and-
daub infill). Corrugated iron roof, once thatched. Unmmoulded framing: arch-
windbraced studwork, windbraced clasped-purlin roof. A pair of blocked
opposing doorways at the northern 2-bay stable (both stables are now united);
the loft above has evidence for only one small diamond-mullioned window,
suggesting a purely storage use. The second loft had 3 windows, and perhaps
was a horseman's lodging. A large opening in the south wall, with adjacent
evidence for a shuttered original window. The 1st floor has been virtually
removed.
