Church Farmhouse
GV II
Former farmhouse, early C16 with mid C16 alterations. major remodelling of 1986/7.
3-cell cross-passage entrance plan, converted to lobby entrance form in late C16
or early C17. 2 storeys. Timber-framed; all infill and plaster and thatched roof
removed at date of survey. The building is of interest for its surviving timber-
framing despite removal of all other features. The earlier building consists of
a 2-bay hall and twin service rooms, with chamber above (the service rooms united
in C17). Good studding with both diamond and oblong mullioned windows; reverse
arched windbraces. An arched cross-entry doorway, and evidence for the second.
Lodged unchamfered ceiling joists at service end, chamfered joists over hall. A
small parlour block was added at north end, with framing of higher quality, in mid
C16. Very good arch windbraced close-studding, with an underbuilt jetty at the
north end. A blocked arched doorway in the east external wall of the parlour.
Evidence for various windows: an oriel at the north end, and a small 2-light window
towards the church. A moulded and cambered early C16 fireplace lintel is reused
in the rebuilt chimney. Both phases have complete hipped coupled rafter roofs.
