3/65 Park Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse, almost certainly a fragment of a larger building. Late C15;
extended to north in later C16. Timber framed, mainly plastered, with a
pantiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. Jettied front carried on plain brackets.
A tall and wide range. Various casement windows, mainly of C20 date; the
first floor windows are set well below eaves level. Mid C20 door and gabled
hood. Internal stack with rendered shaft. Interior considerably modernised
with little of the structure visible. At the south end there are 2 massive
arched braces to the tie beam, part of a tall original window and one reverse-
curved wall brace. The roof over the earlier part is of raised-aisle form,
with jowled queen-posts and heavy, almost solid braces to arcade plates and
collars. Each collar carries a plain crown-post with double-jowled head and
2-way bracing to a collar purlin. One crown post is held by a slip tenon.
There are 2 complete roof bays and part of a third into which the stack has
been inserted. Against this stack is a re-used moulded and embattled beam set
across the arcade plates. The quality and lack of ornament suggests a roof
over a service range. Beyond the stack is a C16 2-tier queen-post roof with
cranked braces. An extensive medieval deer park once surrounded the site.
