5/62 The Cottage
Cottage. Circa early C18 with C19 and C20 alterations and additions. Rendered timber
frame on brick plinth. Steeply pitched pantile roof with breeze boards to gable
ends. Rendered projecting gable end stacks and lateral stack at side of rear wing.
Plan: Small single storey and attic cottage with a 3-room plan main range, the end
rooms heated from gable end stacks, the smaller central room is now the entrance
hall with a C20 porch and staircase. The wing at the rear of the right hand room
with a lateral stack on its right side might be confirmed as a later C18 or C19
addition when apparently the cottage was subdivided. The outshuts on either side of
the rear wing and behind the central room of the main range are probably late C19.
In the C20 the first floor of the left hand room was raised, a single storey
extension (sun room) was added to the right end and porches were built at the front
and back.
Exterior storey and attic. Asymmetrical 4-window south front. Small C20 2-light
casements with transoms. Doorway to right of centre with C20 gabled and
renderd porch with pantile roof. 3 gabled dormers with plain bargeboards. C20
single storey wooden extension on right hand end. At the rear (north) gable-ended
wing to left, its pantile roof swept down over outshuts, either side and another
outshut in the angle behind the main range; all C20 casements.
Interior: Right hand room has chamfered axial beam with one remaining hollow step stop
and exposed joists. The axial beam in the centre room (entrance hall) is boxed in
and the ceiling in the left hand room has been raised. Both fireplaces on the right
and left end rooms have C20 chimneypieces and-the rear wing fireplace has been
rendered. All the interior joinery apears to be C20 including plank doors and the
winder staircase in the rear right hand corner of the centre room. The roof
structure is inaccessible but the rafter ends are exposed under the eaves.
