DUNWICH
WESTLETON ROAD
Remains of Grey Friars Monastery

II*

Ruins of convent of Franciscan friars, comprising walling enclosing an area of
just over 7 acres, 2 gateways to the west and a small fragment of one of the
monastic buildings. Founded here after 1289; surviving remains probably late
C14. Random flint and stone with stone dressings, some later repairs in pebble
and brick. Both gateways have moulded 4-centre arches; the smaller gateway to
the north has flushwork panelling above. The surviving fragment of the
monastic buildings stood along the south side of the cloister; the north wall
has buttresses and 2 tiers of window openings with 4-centre arches, some
restored, one arch with cusping. The boundary wall is fragmentary in places.
Scheduled Ancient Monument (County No. 40).
