Almshouse group, shop and hall. Circa 1912 by Walter Cave. Red brick with rusticated
quoins, plain tiled, hipped roofs with central stacks to pavilions and side stacks
to shop. 2 pavilions linked by a cloister across the middle with the shop behind.
2 storeys with semi-dormers to pavilions and glazed lanterns visible over cloister
roof. Shop to centre flanked by single storey blocks to front. 1 window front to
end pavilions , entrances in sides. Panelled and part glazed telephone box in
cloister to left of centre. Shop complex joined at the left end to No. 1 North
Avenue and No.2 Chestnut Walk.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
