These are more distinguished architecturally than the outside of the house.
They were built between 1757 and 1763 by Sir William Chambers. They form a
complete courtyard of two storeys. The outside facades of the east and west
sides have eight windows, and of the south side twelve windows. Squared
knapped flints with stone quoins. Wooden eaves cornice with modillions.
Slate roof. Glazing bars intact. The east side has a stone projecting
portion with a triglyph frieze and pediment above a large rusticated arch
with gates to the carriageway. Octagonal turret with clock on the roof.
The south side has a large gateway with pairs of Doric columns, moulded
frieze and wooden superstructure like a solid balustrade. No gates to this
doorway. On the same side are two doorways with cornices over, placed cen-
trally between the centre gateway and the ends of the front. Photograph
